Bali, a land known for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant traditions, and profound spirituality, has long captured the hearts of travelers and explorers. At The Mythical Figures of Bali™, we’ve drawn inspiration from the island’s rich cultural heritage to create a unique collection of iconic figures that embody the spirit of Bali. This collection consists of five figures: Barong, Dewi Sri, Drawapala, Hanoman, and Lion. Each figure has been meticulously selected for its cultural significance and symbolic power.
As the designer behind this collection, I, Jean-Pierre Bobbaers, found my inspiration in Ubud, Bali's artistic and spiritual heart. Ubud is more than just a place; it's a sanctuary where tradition and creativity merge. The stories, myths, and art of this region sparked the vision for The Mythical Figures of Bali™—a tribute to the soul of Bali, captured in silver and design.
Barong: The Protector of Good
Barong, often referred to as the king of spirits, is a central figure in Balinese mythology. As the protector of good and enemy of the demon queen Rangda, Barong represents the eternal struggle between good and evil. His majestic presence, often depicted as a lion-like creature, serves as a guardian to the Balinese people. In choosing Barong for our collection, we pay homage to this protector, a symbol of strength, courage, and the triumph of good over adversity.
Dewi Sri: The Goddess of Prosperity
Dewi Sri is revered as the goddess of rice, fertility, and prosperity in Balinese and wider Indonesian mythology. Rice is not only the staple of the Balinese diet but also deeply ingrained in the island's culture, rituals, and way of life. Dewi Sri symbolizes abundance, fertility, and well-being, which is why she is central to Bali’s agricultural traditions. We included Dewi Sri in this collection to honor her role in ensuring harmony and abundance, a reminder of the island’s close connection to nature.
Drawapala: The Mighty Guardian
Drawapala, the figure often seen at the entrance of Balinese temples, is a symbol of protection and strength. This mythical guardian, wielding a club, stands watch over sacred spaces, safeguarding against malevolent forces. The inclusion of Drawapala in our collection was a natural choice as he embodies security, resilience, and the safeguarding of Bali's sacred traditions. His presence in our designs serves as a reminder to protect what is sacred in our lives.
Hanoman: The Devoted Warrior
A central figure in the Hindu epic Ramayana, Hanoman, the monkey god, is renowned for his loyalty, bravery, and divine strength. Known for his unwavering devotion to Lord Rama, Hanoman embodies selfless service and heroism. His playful yet powerful persona resonates with the adventurous spirit of Bali itself. By including Hanoman, we aim to celebrate his embodiment of faith, loyalty, and strength—a reflection of Bali’s dynamic and resilient spirit.
Lion: The Symbol of Courage and Royalty
Though not native to Bali’s traditional mythology, the lion stands as a universal symbol of courage, majesty, and power. We chose the Lion to represent the leadership, bravery, and royal elegance that transcends borders, echoing the essence of Bali's proud cultural heritage. In this way, the Lion symbolizes Bali’s place as a beacon of inspiration, attracting people from across the globe to its shores.
